Tesco is to introduce a new till management system to cut queues at the checkout and ensure cashiers have enough change.
The SmartTill technology, developed by Cash Bases, will this month be introduced to more than 10,000 tills across the retailer’s Extra and Superstore formats.
The intelligent cash drawer system allows the retailer to monitor the cash flow of any given till, ensuring it has adequate cash to prevent delays on customers receiving change, and alerts management when cash levels reach minimum or maximum values.
Tesco hopes the system will enable staff to have more time to focus on customer service.
A Tesco spokeswoman said: “Despite the various transaction technologies available today, we find that many of our customers still use cash as their main method of payment.
“By giving our colleagues more time to help customers at the checkout, SmartTill will help us to provide the very best possible customer service.”
