House of Fraser has submitted a planning application for a distribution hub in Peterborough to support its multichannel operations.
The department store retailer has applied to Peterborough City Council to develop a 750,000 sq ft distribution centre to expand its supply chain.
The retailer said that the new distribution centre would create up to 1,000 new jobs and is “ideally placed” due to its close proximity to London.
Chief executive Nigel Oddy said House of Fraser needs “additional warehouse capacity to meet future supply chain needs and to meet demand for products from our customers”.
The site is a part of the Gateway Peterborough development, which is located at the junction of the A1 and the A605 and is owned by distribution developer Roxhill. It has outline consent for up to 5 million sq ft of industrial and distribution buildings.
House of Fraser’s executive director of commercial and logistics Ray Kavanagh said the retailer “will be working closely with the local authority to ensure our proposals deliver on promises made at the outline stage of jobs, growth and investment in the local economy”.
“Peterborough is an established distribution and manufacturing location and is ideally situated for our needs,” he added.
The department store retailer turned a pre-tax profit for the first time in 10 years in its full-year results last month and reported a 26.8% jump in its online sales.
