The project to replace the grocer’s 12-year-old store systems was undertaken partly to improve service at the checkout.
One way this has been achieved is with Datalogic scanner and scales hardware and software. The technology allows five-sided or 360-degree barcode scanning and can also deduce poorly printed and damaged barcodes.
Waitrose IT project manager David Todd explained: “Five-sided scanning means that it doesn’t matter how you hold the barcode up against the scanner. That’s where the time-saving is made. The software will almost guess the barcode if it is not printed very well.”
The scanners and scales were in use in a few stores prior to the replacement project. Todd added that Waitrose is confident that the units can perform and that there were financial benefits to being able to re-use units that had already been deployed.
The hardware is suitable for use with both Waitrose’s main checkout lanes and its smaller podia checkouts.
