Wages are set to rise by an average of 6 per cent at 1,200 outlets. The supermarket giant said the changes would allow it to remain competitive with other retailers and meet a need for workers and managers as it continues to expand.
Campaign group WakeUpWalMart.com is touring the US with the aim of publicising the company's employment practices.
WakeUpWalMart.com campaign director Paul Blank said: 'Like most of Wal-Mart's recent publicity stunts, the company takes one step forward and two steps backwards.'
In a statement, Wal-Mart head of human resources Susan Chambers said the company remained competitive with wages and benefits.
Wal-Mart, owner of the Asda chain in the UK, has more than 1.3 million employees in the US.
