Waterstone’s will close 11 stores as part of parent HMV’s plan to shed 60 stores across the group this year.
Shops to close on February 6 are:
- Chelmsford, Meadows
- Colchester, Culver Square
- Coventry, Cathedral Lanes
- Dublin, Dawson Street
- Dublin, Jervis Street
- Guildford, North Street
- Hemel Hempstead, Marlowes Centre
- Luton
- Stafford, Guildhall
- Tiverton
- Worcester, High Street
Staff have been informed today of the closures and a consultation process has begun.
A Waterstone’s spokesman said “where possible we’ll be looking to redeploy staff” but added that there will be redundancies.
Nine of the stores are in areas where Waterstone’s has more than one shop. However, the bookseller will be pulling out of Luton and Tiverton all together.
HMV revealed last month it would shut 20 Waterstone’s shops. Earlier this year it revealed the closure of Slough and Edinburgh East End, which have both closed. Maidenhead is also slated to shut but has not yet.
On Sunday HMV shut nine shops as part of the same property restructure as the group seeks to cut costs.
