The retailer will make a donation to the conservation charity every time a customer chooses not to take a carrier bag. The company said: 'Our target is to fund the planting of 10,000 trees by the end of 2008 to create new woodland across the UK.'
WHSmith stores director Simon Marinker said: 'We are committed to managing the environmental impacts of our business and are aware that our customers also want to protect the environment. This is demonstrated by the excellent response to the Woodland Trust Christmas card recycling scheme which we already run in stores.'
The initiative will operate in WHSmith's 543 high street stores, 216 retail units and 142 airport, station and motorway service areas.
Woodland Trust chief executive Sue Holden said: 'We are delighted to be working in partnership with WHSmith to cut carrier bag use, while also helping to fund our woodland conservation activities. We hope that WHSmith's customers will really get behind this campaign and help to protect our environment.'
