Two of the UK’s biggest supermarkets, Asda and Morrisons, have launched new initiatives to woo customers into store.

Asda has pledged to slash the cost of 3,000 products. The grocer will also introduce a £5 voucher for every customer who spends £40 in-store for the week beginning Monday. Shoppers will be able to redeem the “thank you” voucher off their next £40 shop.

Morrisons has launched a cash giveaway to entice customers into store. From today until October 30, as part of ‘Morrisons Millions’, every shopper will be entered into a daily draw for every £1 they spend, with three customers per day in each store taking home a £100 prize. The retailer will be giving away over £2m in total.

Asda’s lower price campaign, which focuses on household staples such as bread, butter and cereal, comes after Tesco launched its own £500m price-cutting drive on everyday last month and Sainsbury’s unveiled its Brand Match scheme.

Asda kickstarted the price war across the UK’s biggest supermarkets when it launched its Asda Price Guarantee earlier this year where it offered a refund if the bill is not 10% cheaper than its rivals.

An Asda spokesman said: “Other stores don’t want a price war, they only want a skirmish over price perception. There is no price war because no other stores showed up to win.”
