However, shutters are growing fast too. Although they account for just 5 per cent of the market (£23 million), sales rose 44 per cent between 2004 and 2006 alone. By contrast, sales of curtains have remained static at£640 million, with value sales increasing by just 2 per cent over the same period.
'The past five years have seen a rapid renaissance of shutters, a traditional window furnishing that is finding a new popularity in today's homes,' said Mintel market analyst Vivianne Ihekweazu.
Their rising popularity is caused by a trend of maximising of space in the housing sector. Glass extensions and conservatories as well as loft conversions mean that blinds are the most appropriate option.
