Online retailers have reported a surge in sales as consumers avoid trekking to London’s West End during the Olympics.
Sales at etailer BrandAlley doubled year-on-year on Monday when many Londoners are understood to have worked from home to avoid potential travel chaos. Tuesday’s sales also jumped 60%.
Brand Alley UK chief executive Rob Feldman said: “With our more London-centric customer we believe people chose to work from home to avoid disruptions from the Games and this has definitely lifted etail sales.”
Premium etailer MyWardrobe global chief executive David Worby said the Olympic celebrations had driven a sales uplift, with revenue up 19% year-on-year since the Games began.
Data specialists Experian revealed that visits to retail websites have also reveals that visits to retail websites have increased by 15% year-on-year.
It said: “It looks like consumers are preferring to shop from the comfort of their sofa while watching the Olympics on the TV.”
Very, owned by online giant Shop Direct, said traffic on Saturday afternoon was up 15% week-on-week jumping to 30% on Sunday afternoon, although it said it was difficult to pinpoint if the surge was solely due to the Olympics.
