Online retailers are hoping for one of their busiest days today with growing numbers of shoppers looking online for their Christmas presents.
According to Deloitte 69% of shoppers plan to buy some of their Christmas gifts online this year.
Online retailer The Hut group, which runs Zavvi.com said that many shoppers are already ordering their Christmas gifts and it had its busiest day last Monday (November 23) with 1,600 orders a minute taken in its peak trading hour between 8pm and 9pm.
In America today is dubbed “Cyber Monday” as it is a holiday there with 100m shoppers expected to shop online.
Play.com believes next Monday (December 7) will be the busiest day online this year and the IMRG predicts £350m will be spent online that day. This would be 10% up on last year. It also predicts that sales online in December could reach £5bn.
IMRG director of operations David Smith said: “Despite the credit crunch, the online retail sector is still growing, with an increasing number of consumers appreciating the ease and efficiency of shopping online. Consumers have become much savvier and cost conscious in the current climate; we are seeing a growing trend of online price comparisons so customers ensure they get the best deal for their purchase.”
