Marks & Spencer was forced to suspend its website yesterday after complaints from customers that they could see other people’s contact details when they logged into the site.
However, the retailer stressed that the site had not been breached.
In a statement, a spokesman said: “Due to a technical issue we temporarily suspended our website yesterday evening. This allowed us to thoroughly investigate and resolve the issue and quickly restore service for our customers.
“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.”
Customers took to social media to complain about the problems. However it is understood that customers could not see anyone else’s bank details.
The site went down around 7.30pm yesterday, but resumed normal service by 10pm.
M&S launched a membership scheme called ‘Sparks’ earlier this month, which involves customers leaving their details online.
Cyber security is becoming an increasing area of concern for retailers. In August, Carphone Warehouse suffered a customer data breach. Last week telecoms firm TalkTalk also was hit by a major online security breach.
