Retail Week looks ahead to the next seven days as Asos, Boots, Burberry and Travis Perkins update, while Sergio Bucher takes the reins at Debenhams.
Debenhams
The department store chain’s new boss Sergio Bucher officially takes the reins on Monday. Debenhams caught the City off guard in May by unveiling Bucher as its successor to Michael Sharp. The half-Spanish, half-Swiss retailer joins the business from Amazon, where he served as the etailer’s European fashion boss.
Asos
The fashion etailer unveils its full-year results on Tuesday. Asos has reacted angrily to allegations surrounding working conditions at its warehouse in Barnsley, but the business will be bidding to put the accusations to one side and build on sales success. Retail sales soared 30% in its third quarter as active shopper numbers jumped 24% to 12 million.
Burberry
The luxury fashion retailer and brand posts its first-half trading update on Tuesday, as it seeks to rebound from a disappointing first quarter. Burberry said like-for-like sales dropped 3% during the three months to June 30, as it suffered declines in all markets. Its latest update comes a month before its interim results, which will be unveiled in November.
Grocery sales
Kantar and Nielsen publish their latest grocery market share data on Tuesday. Both companies suggested that overall grocery sales edged up during August, although Asda continued to suffer declines. Tesco received a fillip last month by registering its best performance of 2016, according to Kantar, with sales for the 12 weeks ending September 10 down 0.2%.
Travis Perkins
The Wickes owner updates the market with third-quarter trading performance on Wednesday. Travis Perkins, which also owns Toolstation and Tile Giant, enjoyed a 6.5% jump in like-for-like sales within its retail division during the first half of its financial year, as pre-tax profit across the group rose 10.2% to £184m.
Boots
The health and beauty specialist reveals its full-year results on Thursday. According to Walgreens Boots Alliance’s third-quarter update, like-for-like sales in its international division, which includes the UK business, dipped 0.2%. In July, Boots lifted the lid on plans to expand into South Korea by launching stores in partnership with hypermarket retailer Emart.
Retail sales
The Office for National Statistics releases its latest retail sales data on Thursday, covering the month of September. Total retail sales by volume rose 6.2% year-on-year during August as rising grocery sales offset a slowdown in fashion spending.
