Asda is doubling the number of click-and-collect points available at London Underground stations from next week, following the successful roll-out of its current offer.
The grocer is making the same-day service available at another six London Underground station car parks.
It means that from September 9 customers who place an order online before noon will be able to pick up their shopping after 4pm from Blackhorse Road, Hainault and Queensbury. The service will be available at Canons Park and Fairlop from September 10 and it will launch at Hornchurch towards the end of the month.
Asda was the first supermarket to roll out click-and-collect on the London Underground when it launched it last September. It already offers the service at East Finchley, Harrow and Wealdstone, High Barnet, Highgate, Stanmore and Epping stations.
Asda chief operating officer Mark Ibbotson said: “Asda’s led the way on providing new ways for our customers to shop and, given the popularity of the existing service, creating more sites across the capital was the next logical step.”
Asda said those customers using the London Underground service shopped twice as often as those using other Asda click-and-collect points. And shoppers using the London Underground station collection points have spent 16% more per shop than customers using other Asda collection points in 2014.
Ibbotson added: “What’s interesting for me to see is that demand has come not only from busy commuters but also people living locally. A third of customers using the service are residents who live close to London Underground stations and are using this service in the same way as they would a local supermarket, giving them the freedom to collect their online purchases at a time that’s most convenient for them.”
Asda said fresh food was the most popular category bought through the service as commuters buy ingredients for their evening meals.
Transport for London director of commercial development Graeme Craig said: “All the revenue generated from our partnership with Asda, and other retailers, will be reinvested back into our network to improve services for our customers.”
Asda wants to be the most convenient online supermarket retailer and over the next five years plans to introduce 1,000 click-and-collect points across the UK and increase physical access to Asda from 53% of the population to 70% by 2018.
