The Co-op has partnered with Deliveroo to pilot home deliveries as the mutual ramps up its convenience credentials.
Retail Week can reveal the c-store specialist has started selling snacks, confectionary, soft drinks, beers, wines and spirits through the online delivery platform as part of its drive to “widen access to Co-op products”.
As well as selecting individual products, Deliveroo users will also be able to purchase ‘party bundle deals’, containing alcohol and snacks, as the Co-op bids to cash in on the ‘big night in’ trend.
The Co-op is trialling the tie-up through five stores in the Greater Manchester area, close to its One Angel Square HQ.
Orders placed through Deliveroo will be fulfilled by its shops in West Didsbury, Corporation Street in Manchester, Vimto Gardens in Salford, Wilbraham Road in Chorlton and Heald Green in Cheadle.
A spokesman for the Co-op said: “We are a leading convenience retailer and have launched an exciting partnership with Deliveroo to make access to our products and services even easier for consumers.
“This small trial will focus on beers, wines and spirits as well as snacks and confectionary and will be limited to the Greater Manchester area.”
Unlike many of its rivals, the Co-op does not currently sell through its own transactional grocery website.
However, group chief executive Steve Murrells and his predecessor Richard Pennycook have both consistently refused to rule out the prospect of trading online.
