The supermarket price war has pushed prices down for another month as the CPI rate of inflation fell to 1.5% in August, from 1.6% in July.
Prices of food and non-alcoholic drinks fell by 1.1% in August, their steepest decline in more than a decade, the Office for National Statistics said.
Partially offsetting the downward trend, prices across clothing, transport services and alcohol rose faster than the headline inflation rate.
