Lidl pledges £1bn investment to reach 1,000-store target

Lidl's new store in Rushden features a glass frontage, which will form the blueprint of all its new stores in the UK.

Lidl has pledged to invest more than £1bn in new stores over the next two years as it ramps up expansion plans to reach its target of 1,000 stores in the UK by 2023.

On the day it opened its 800th store in the UK, the discounter said it would invest £1.3bn in store expansion over 2021 and 2022 to help it achieve its 1,000-store goal.

The supermarket will open four new stores today, followed by six next week. It recently opened its 100th store in Scotland and is set to open its 100th in London this year.

Lidl has opened 16 new stores in the UK this year already and 50 stores across the UK last year, creating 2,500 new jobs.
