Sainsbury’s will open its first environmentally friendly convenience shop in Bath in early November.
The grocer expects the 3,000 sq ft shop to save an estimated 27 tons of CO2. The Sainsbury’s Local includes energy-saving initiatives such as LED lighting on the sales floor, a heat recovery system at the store entrance and 70% recycled ceiling tiles.
It also makes use of old railway sleepers from nearby Bath Spa Station as bump rails in its warehouse.
Sainsbury’s convenience director Dido Harding said the retailer remains committed to reducing energy, packaging and food waste. She said: “We hope the learnings will be put to good use in further developing our eco-friendly initiatives for our future stores.”
