John Lewis has smashed its single day’s sales record during its post-Christmas Clearance.
Sales at the department store chain rose 54% to £27.8m on December 27 compared to the same day last year, which was a Sunday. The figure represented a 30% increase on John Lewis’ previous biggest ever day on December 27 in 2008.
Sales on both December 27 and December 28 beat previous records for a single day’s sales.
For the first three days of the Clearance period, from Monday December 27 to Wednesday December 29, sales were up 26.2%
Nat Wakely, director selling operations for John Lewis, said: “There has been an overwhelmingly positive response to our Clearance offer with customers queuing outside our shops on the first day in anticipation of the bargains on offer.
“All three buying directorates have seen very strong sales with their respective best sellers being an Acer laptop, Molton Brown’s global gift set and a classic pocket-sprung mattress. The home directorate has also seen pillows selling at a rate of one every five seconds and duvets flying off the shelves at a rate of one every 10 seconds.”
