Mothercare has hired former Carphone Warehouse managing director Matt Stringer as the new commercial director for its UK business.
Stringer will join the business on March 1 and will sit alongside director of product and sourcing Philippe Dayraud and Jude Bridge, director of marketing. Stringer will report directly to chief executive Simon Calver.
His role was created as part of the management restructure that led to UK managing director Mike Logue exiting the business, as revealed by Retail-Week.com.
Calver has taken on more direct control of Mothercare’s UK business, which is mid-turnaround.
Stringer implemented Carphone Warehouse’s “Wireless World” store format in the UK, which housed a wider range of electronics than its standard stores.
It is understood his vast multichannel experience proved attractive to Mothercare which has pinpointed the area as central to its turnaround plan.
Prior to his time at Carphone Warehouse Stringer held a variety of senior merchandising and operational roles at Marks & Spencer.
Calver said: “He brings significant commercial and operational expertise and will complement the skills of Philippe Dayraud and Jude Bridge. In addition to his appointment, the appointment of Matt Smith as chief financial officer puts us in a very strong position to push ahead with the delivery of our three-year Transformation and Growth plan.”
Smith, who is set to join on March 25, will complete the retailer’s new management team.
