The online grocery market will almost double in value to £11.2bn by 2016, according to industry analysts IGD.
It predicts that by the end of the year, online will account for 3.8% of total grocery spend in the UK and is projected to increase to 6% in five years time.
IGD estimates that the British online grocery market is currently worth £5.9 billion.
The IGD ShopperTrack research showed that 44% of shoppers surveyed intend to shop online for their groceries in the next five to 10 years, compared to just 17% who are doing so now.
Almost two thirds of respondents use two or more online supermarkets for food and groceries.
IGD chief executive Joanne Denney-Finch said: “A digital explosion is taking place and technology is advancing in leaps and bounds.
“Although online grocery retailing only accounts for 3.8% of the total grocery market, it is the fastest growing grocery channel and one which will be used more widely in the future as shoppers become increasingly multi-channel.”
