Tesco is expanding its online operation to the Czech Republic and Poland, with plans to launch a grocery offer in the two countries by the end of next year.
The grocer will work with multichannel supplier IVIS Group to roll out the web sites, with the Czech Republic launching later this year and Poland following in 2012.
Tesco generated sales of £1.28bn last year in the Czech Republic, making it the grocer’s fifth-largest country in Europe by sales.
Ireland and South Korea are the only other overseas territories where Tesco sells online currently. It launched a non-food website in South Korea in January, to complement its existing online grocery business.
Tesco declined to say whether it would launch online operations in its other overseas territories. The retailer has 2,700 stores outside of the UK, in countries including the US, China, and Thailand.
Tesco chief executive Phil Clarke said earlier this year that expanding online trading is a priority.
The grocer is using software called Sonetto to provide detailed product information and price and promotion management, and Tesco IT director Richard Copperthwaite said the new version of the software is “simpler for staff to use and better for our customers”.
