Campaigners protesting against the Tesco store in Stokes Croft have won the right to have the granting of planning permission for the shop reviewed.
The Tesco Express store in Bristol has been the focus of riots since it opened. Protesters claim the city council was wrong to give the go-ahead to the store. They will now be able to put their arguments to a judicial review, expected this autumn.
Violence broke out at the store earlier this year just a week after it opened. At the same time, members of the group No Tesco in Stokes Croft have been fighting against the store in the courts. The group believes Tesco will harm local independent shops.
The review will focus on a narrow element of the planning permission concerning the installation of equipment, but the group hopes to raise wider arguments.
A spokesman for Tesco told the Guardian: “This judicial review is about the decision to allow the installation of plant equipment not about whether our popular local store should be open.”
