Iconic Piccadilly department store Fortnum & Mason is to enter in to a consultation period with its 530 staff as it anticipates a “particularly tough” 2009.

Managing director Beverley Aspinall told Retail Week that the retailer does not anticipate that its shopfloor or front of house staff will be affected, but 100 jobs at management level and behind the scenes are likely to be impacted.

The retailer told staff of the decision in a meeting today.

The consultation period is set to begin on February 5 and will form part of a wider cost-cutting review of the business. Aspinall declined to provide further details ahead of the review of how the retailer intends to slash costs.

She added that the move was “in line” with many other retailers and follows challenging trading in December.

“Christmas, when it came, was pretty good but it was late,” she said. “We anticipate that 2009 will be a particularly tough year.”

The retailer will announce its full-year results in February.
