There is no doubt online sales significantly grew this year and affected footfall, but remember that weather has a much more significant impact on key days like Boxing Day. It was largely wet in 2015, but sunny and dry in 2016, which explains (to some extent) the bigger footfall decreases in shopping centres. A wet Boxing Day 2017 will see shopping centre footfall increase year on year, and most probably reports of the return to bricks and mortar retailing!
