Retailers at the Norwood Heights shopping centre have complained that the vacant store has caused a sharp decline in sales in neighbouring shops.
Legal and General, which owns the shopping centre, said that it had been in 'active discussions with a number of potential occupiers' before it agreed terms with Sainsbury's.
The store is due to open this summer. The lease is for 25 years at a rent of£20 per sq foot.
