Sainsbury’s has bought a former Co-op site in Slough after previous owner Tesco was ordered to sell it by the Competition Commission.
The Competition Commission has agreed to the sale and Sainsbury’s will open a 55,000 sq ft store on the property, creating 450 jobs.
Tesco had bought the site in 2003, but the acquisition became the subject of a Competition Commission investigation because of a Tesco Extra store opening less than a mile away. The former Co-op store was left derelict until it was demolished in 2007.
The new shop will feature a food offer as well as a complementary non-food offer including the grocer’s Tu fashion range.
