The Entertainer has posted a seventh consecutive year of sales growth in what founder Gary Grant described as a “momentous period”.

Underlying pre-tax profits stood at £8.1m for the year ended January 30, up from £7.6m. The Entertainer practises tithing and donates 10% of its net profit to charity - this year it gave away £750,000.

Total sales reached £139.5m, up 8%. Like-for-likes were flat because in the absence of strong consumer trends such as the craze for loom bands the previous year. On a two-year basis like-for-likes advanced 11%.

Exceptional costs of £1.2m were incurred due to the construction of a new warehouse in Banbury, meaning that after exceptional items, pre-tax profits stood at £6.9m.

The Entertainer opened 18 new UK stores and now has 126 branches in Britain and six overseas. Sales at online arm TheToyShop.com climbed 39%.

Grant said: “The Entertainer will continue to invest, both in-store and online, to enhance the customer experience, this year’s focus being customer personalisation and the launch of our biggest ever TV advertising campaign.”
