B&Q has sublet space in its Norwich store to grocer Morrisons as the DIY retailer pursues its strategy of downsizing larger stores.
B&Q will hand over 60,000 sq ft of the store to Morrisons, which will open a supermarket on the site next month shortly after B&Q opens its new format store on August 22.
B&Q is downsizing large stores to other retailers as it seeks to adapt the business to reflect the growth of multichannel sales.
Last year it split its 120,000 sq ft store in Belvedere, south London and sublet 60,000 sq ft of space to Asda, which opened one of its smaller-format supermarket stores there.
The new Morrisons supermarket will create up to 300 jobs.
B&Q store manager Colin Bradford said: “This deal is great news for customers and the local community as our New Look store will revitalise our existing format, making it easier for them to shop and improve their retail experience.
“It will also enable us to continue serving our customers to the highest possible standard, allowing them to make the most of their visit. We will be working closely with Morrisons throughout the entire process and are committed to helping enhance the whole shopping experience on site.”
