Subway Restaurants, the world's largest sandwich chain with more than 21,000 outlets worldwide, has opened its 300th UK and Ireland store in Chorlton, Manchester. It is now on track to open more than 2,000 outlets by 2010.
Subway president and co-founder Fred DeLuca said the chain plans to open a further 1,700 outlets across the British Isles and more than 4,000 outlets across Europe over the next six years.
Last month, the company opened its 50th store in Ireland, on a petrol station forecourt at Dungannon in County Tyrone.
'Subway Restaurants has experienced rapid growth in the UK and Ireland recently and is leading our international expansion. The UK and Ireland is an excellent blueprint for growth and we plan to mirror that success across Europe,' DeLuca said.
By focusing on a healthier menu than traditional fast-food operators, Subway has been able to expand at a very rapid rate, opening an average of 15 stores a month in the UK and Ireland this year.
It also developing a further 250 stores in the two countries.
