Asda is to introduce a new service to allow shoppers to order online, pay in-store with cash and have the product delivered to home as it unveils plans to merge its three websites into one.
The grocer will relaunch its sites for grocery, non-food and clothing brand George in the first half of 2015 as part of a global re-platforming programme by parent Walmart, Retail Week can reveal.
The retailer has already begun implementing the back office systems which will allow shoppers to check out through one basket.
The revamped sites will allow Asda multichannel shoppers to use the Pay with Cash service, which Walmart offers in the US, as well as reserve and collect where shoppers pay for and pick up reserved online orders.
The service is targeted at shoppers without debit and credit cards.
Asda multichannel director Jon Wragg said: “We have already successfully completed the first stages of back-end services migration for Asda Direct. We will migrate further services throughout 2014, with a front end migration planned for the first half of 2015.”
He added: “We are constantly implementing new releases to improve aspects of our online experience, and to keep the Asda app at the top of the customer review charts.”
The initiative is part of Walmart’s global Pangaea project to migrate the grocery giant’s website to its new technology platform.
