Google is launching Android Pay in the UK with retailers including Boots and Aldi signed up to accept the mobile payments service.
The online giant will introduce its mobile wallet proposition to the UK market in the next few months, following its launch in the US last September.
Retailers including Aldi, Boots, Superdrug and Waitrose have signed up to accept Android Pay, which will support MasterCard and Visa payments.
Google senior director of product management Pali Bhat said in a blog that shoppers “will be able to use Android Pay everywhere contactless payments are accepted.”
Android Pay will rival Apple Pay, which was introduced to the UK last summer.
As well as allowing shoppers to pay for retail purchases, Google’s mobile wallet will allow users to make travel payments to Transport for London.
Boots omnichannel and development director Robin Phillips said: “Offering our customers and patients new, innovative store experiences is at the heart of our strategy, and we know our customers increasingly want faster payment options.
“Android Pay means even more of our customers will be able to use their smartphones to make purchases in our stores – ensuring checkout is quicker and easier than ever before.”
