Tesco is piloting the sale of jewellery in a venture likely to pile pressure on high street specialists such as Signet and Beaverbrooks.
The grocer is following the lead of Asda, which has enjoyed huge success with the category and is introducing it to 220 stores before Christmas.
Tesco is offering 600 jewellery lines at its Warrington Extra store.
The range runs from costume jewellery for£2 to an 18-carat gold solitaire diamond ring for£499.
A Tesco spokeswoman said jewellery performance at Warrington would be monitored before any roll-out decision.
Tesco reported UK like-for-likes up 6.9 per cent in the third quarter.
