Tesco has submitted a planning application for a new regional distribution centre on part of a former Ford site in east London.
The DC will be a process facility for recycled used packaging “as part of the Tesco environmental commitment”. It will also act as a vehicle maintenance unit.
The location, Beam Reach Business Park, was previously part of the Ford motor works.
Outline planning permission for the site is also being sought for additional warehousing and improvements to the nature reserve.
More than 900 people will be employed at the site initially, and this will increase to 1,200 once the site is fully operational.
Tesco corporate affairs manager Tony Fletcher said Tesco is “extremely pleased with the level of positive feedback” from locals in the area.
Tesco expects the application will be determined by the end of October.
