Tesco is to snap up T&S Stores in a deal worth£377 million that is likely to create a seismic shift in the convenience market.
The acquisition will put the grocer well on the way to its 1,000 store target for its Express chain.
Tesco plans to convert 450 of T&S's 862 shops to Express within the next three to four years. Others will continue to trade as One Stop or Day & Nite, but Tesco will sell on T&S's Dillons and Supercigs chains.
Chief executive Sir Terry Leahy said: 'The conversion of many of T&S's stores to the Express format will create jobs overall and strengthen our presence in many neighbourhoods across the country.'
