Building bonds with Gen Z, Alphas, Digital Arrivals and beyond: winning the next generation of shoppers
The next generation of consumers want more from brands, whether that’s personalised products, innovative in-store experiences or flexible payment options. With budgets tighter than ever, they want the brands they spend with to share their ethics and values.
Retailers need to understand what drives Gen Z and Alpha spending and exactly what channels and messaging resonates with them. From TikTok influencer ads to experiential pop-ups, retailers and brands must think differently to raise expectations.
We will also look at how key demographics are behaving differently – such as Baby Boomers evolving to become Digital Arrivals – and ask what these changes mean for the evolution of online and offline experiences.
To kick-start our Consumer Week virtual masterclass, we will explore how retailers can attract and keep favour with these lucrative groups of shoppers.
Speakers will include:
- Rasmus Brix, Managing Director, Pandora
- Georgia Kinahan, Senior Content Manager, Retail Week
- Elissa Quinby, Senior Director of Retail Marketing, Quantum Metric
- Giovanna Vieira, Marketing Manager, Rotaro

Future-fit tech: From AR to Z – the innovations transforming the path to purchase
As the digital and physical worlds become further intertwined, technologies such as virtual and augmented reality and the metaverse will be a necessary part of the consumer experience.
From Nike’s metaverse venture Nikeland to L'Oréal’s AR-powered try-on beauty experience, brands investing in forward-thinking digital experiences are seeing higher engagement and extended brand reach among new demographics.
In this intimate fireside chat with Tom Ward, Chief Ecommerce Officer at Walmart, we’ll give you a first look at the biggest innovations to expect across the future retail landscape and the investments retailers must make today to achieve them.
Speakers will include:
- Luke Tugby, Editor, Retail Week
- Tom Ward, Chief Ecommerce Officer, Walmart
10.45am–10.50am – Coffee break
10.50am–11.30am – Panel discussion
The cost of loyalty: how data can help you cut through a price-driven market
From Tesco ramping up Clubcard with the launch of its 30% off Better Baskets incentive campaign and the Co-op personalising its loyalty offering to Boots extending its Price Advantage scheme to online, retailers are doubling down on customer loyalty to cut through the cost-of-living crisis.
But successful loyalty and rewards schemes hinge on customer data.
Retailers may have access to more data than ever before, but they must leverage insights effectively to provide shoppers with the greatest value – after all, consumers are now more precious about their spending than at any time in the past 30 years.
In this closing panel of our virtual Consumer Week masterclass, we’ll be joined by retailers who are drawing on consumer data to not only create competitive loyalty programmes but also feed shopper insights gleaned from these schemes back into their strategies.
Speakers will include:
- Lisa Byfield-Green, Research Director, Retail Week
- AJ Patel, Global Head of Ecommerce, REN Clean Skincare
- Jay Wright, Chief Executive, Virgin Wines

There will also be plenty of networking opportunities to carry on these conversations with your peers.

The best CX bets: Where to find the biggest bang for your buck
The cost-of-living crisis is set to hit retailers and customers hard.
Indeed, real UK household disposable income will fall 2.2% per person in 2022/23, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility – this would be the biggest fall in living standards in any single financial year since Office for National Statistics records began.
Retailers must now sharpen their CX investments to reach consumers and meaningfully engage with them against this backdrop. This means spending on CX with useful effect, understanding the best long-term transformation bets and what marketing to safely stop doing without impacting bottom lines.
At this opening Consumer Week summit panel, we’ll explore how to guide your CX investments towards the greatest returns.
Speakers include:
- Megan Dunsby, Senior Commercial Content Editor, Retail Week
- Constanze Freienstein, Managing Director, Lands’ End Europe
- Richard Hammond, Chief Executive and Co-founder, Uncrowd

Seizing store opportunities: what consumers really want from physical retail
Stores bore the brunt of pandemic restrictions, with erratic closures putting immense pressure on retailers to build up their online capabilities. With consumers now happy to shop from home, the purpose of stores and what role they play in the future retail ecosystem have been brought into question.
However, traditional retailers and digital-natives face the same predicament: how do you replicate the physical feeling of a store in the ecommerce space?
Retailers have a significant opportunity to reroute their store strategies to create an engaging and innovative customer experience, from Marks & Spencer’s new wine tasting offering to Vans’ in-house skatepark. Brands must ensure their stores are destinations, where customers can connect and have new experiences.
This fireside chat will take a deep dive into what consumers want from physical retail and how brands can reimagine their stores to increase engagement and build customer communities.
Speakers include:
- Kris Hamer, Director of Insight, British Retail Consortium (BRC)
- Ross Monaghan, Sales Director, Pandora
10.10am–10.30am – Coffee and networking break
10.30am–11.05am – Panel discussion
Retail future: meet the trailblazers shaking up the industry
The turbulent environment retailers have inhabited over the past two years has highlighted how brands need to innovate to stay competitive. As the cost-of-living crisis worsens, retailers need to fight to gain access to customers’ limited spending.
High street favourites that were unable to adapt have closed their doors for good – a stark reminder of the constant need for retailers to make canny investments to stay relevant.
Alongside traditional businesses creating new revenue streams, a wave of disruptive brands have entered the marketplace and are turning retailers’ heads. From subscription services and direct-to-consumer marketplaces to resale platform partnerships, the opportunities for growth are there for the taking.
Join Retail Week and business transformation partner HSO as we bring together some of the industry’s biggest disruptors to discuss how to shake up established business models to expand your market reach.
Speakers include:
- Isobel Chillman, Relationship Director, Retail Week
- Hector Hickmott, Head of Retail, HSO
- Emily Kraftman, Managing Director – UK and Europe, Who Gives a Crap
- Jasper Sutcliffe, UK Publishing and Affiliate Manager, Bookshop.org
11.05am–11.30am – Fireside chat
Getting (even) smarter on social: elevating engagement and building brand communities
Social platforms have given retailers direct access to their customers’ interests, particularly in terms of what’s trending and what’s not. It is those brands that view social media as a fundamental pillar of their marketing strategy that are reaping the benefits.
From one-click purchases via Instagram to virtual try-ons via Snapchat and TikTok shopping hauls, brands must be present in the social spaces their customers now occupy. With costs rising, consumers are spending more time at home to save money and this creates new opportunities for retailers and brands to capture their attention.
To close the Consumer Week summit, we will be joined by a retailer killing it on social media with an innovative, tech-savvy approach to share their insights around driving the greatest ROI.
Speakers include:
- Neesha Sharma, Editorial Manager, Trinny London
- Rosie Shepard, Reporter, Retail Week
