Hot spells at the start of the week meant shoppers stayed away, according to customer traffic monitor FootFall. However, traffic increased over the weekend as the temperature cooled.
The week-on-week change was a fall in shopper numbers by 0.8 per cent for the week ending June 26, although weekend footfall rose 7 per cent compared with the weekend before.
Footfall marketing manager Natasha Burton noted that the increase in traffic coincided with some fashion retailers resorting to early summer Sales for fear of being left with surplus stock at the end of the season.
She said: 'The increase in demand for summer ranges, driven by the warm weather, has come at a time when many retailers are launching promotions to shift stock, which could prove great for consumers and volumes, but may affect margins.'
