Well spoken Peter! Let's hope that the General Election pierces the hot air balloon that calls itself Prime Minister.
And perhaps you could encourage the Lords Woolfson and, now, Rose to buy in to your critique of our shameful national situation.Government needs a proposal from retail leaders for a replacement to business rates.
Go bold: replace retail business rates with an increase in VAT. It's the most efficient tax, AND treats on- and off-line sales equally.
Please can someone explain why this is not a way forward?Come on business leaders. Must do better!
Walker said: “Business rates are an outdated Victorian taxation system that have little relevance to our modern, multi-channel retail economy. Fundamental reform of the system is the only way we will stem the decline of high street communities.”
If your team came to you only with a problem (of which you had been aware for years) without proposing a solution (beyond some short term fixes) you'd send them for retraining! So, propose solutions!
Why not scrap the system entirely (including the whole ghastly industry built up around it), increase VAT and distribute funds from the centre to local authorities. VAT is an efficient tax and treats on and off line sales equally.
This debate has gone on too long, in part because our retail leaders have failed to be clear about a solution to a monumentally boring and dull subject.Extra VAT on online sales (Dave Lewis): wrong
Freeze business rates (BRC): mucking around
Replace business rates with additional VAT: simple, easy, swift, effective, efficient
Is government listening?
