EBay is planning to integrate barcode scanning technology into all of its iPhone apps, following the acquisition of barcode technology company RedLaser last week.
The move comes as eBay prepares to launch its first iPhone app for sellers, eBay Selling, later this week, as it pushes into mobile shopping. The retailer will integrate RedLaser’s barcode scanning technology from launch, making it the first app to use the technology, which is designed to help consumers find online deals and product information by scanning product barcodes.
The new app will help sellers to create quick listings by accessing pricing trends and product details from eBay’s catalogue.
RedLaser will also be used in eBay Marketplace, StubHub and Shopping.com. It has already been downloaded by 2 million users.
EBay Marketplaces chief technology officer and senior vice-president, global products Mark Carges said: “With RedLaser’s technology, eBay is continuing to help shoppers quickly find the best deals online.”
EBay is making the RedLaser standalone app free and is also planning to “significantly” increase its range.
According to eBay, in the past year the m-commerce market was worth £123m in the UK and is expected to double in the next three years.
