Fashion giant Inditex has announced a three-year partnership with LA-based start-up Ambercycle to help “scale textile-to-textile recycled polyester”.
Zara’s parent company said the agreement involves buying a “significant portion of the annual production of cycora”, which is Ambercycle’s production of recycled polyester, for €70m (£61m).
Inditex said the purchase commitment will be “key to support the construction of Ambercycle’s first commercial-scale textile regeneration factory”.
Ambercycle’s production of cycora at its commercial plant is expected to start in 2025 and Inditex said it will be incorporated into its product offering over the next three years.
This comes as part of Inditex’s plan to have 100% of its textile products made exclusively from materials with a “smaller environmental footprint” by 2030.
Inditex also unveiled that Zara’s sportswear sub-brand Zara Athleticz has launched its first capsule collection in collaboration with Ambercycle, including pieces crafted with up to 50% cycora content, which is now available to shop online at Zara.
Inditex chief sustainability officer Javier Losada said: “At Inditex, we are committed to achieving circularity in the fashion industry. We want to drive innovation to scale up new solutions, processes and materials to achieve textile-to-textile recycling.
“Ambercycle’s groundbreaking molecular regeneration technology transforms end-of-life textiles into new materials, effectively reducing waste and emissions in the production cycle.”
Ambercycle chief executive Shay Sethi added: “Ambercycle’s goal is to enable circularity by replacing virgin polyester with textile-to-textile regenerated cycora.
“Our partnership with Inditex represents a monumental leap towards realising circularity at scale in the fashion industry”.
