Jóhannesson faces embezzlement and breach of trust charges in his native Iceland and the case was not expected to begin until October. However, the court has convened a special hearing in Reykjavik to consider 18 of the 40 charges ahead of the case, including some of the most serious counts, according to Icelandic reports.
The investigation into Jóhannesson's affairs lasted for three years and derailed several deals for Baugur, including bids for Top Shop and Somerfield. Jóhannesson has consistently pleaded his innocence and claims that the charges are politically motivated.
The prosecution team has made no formal comment, although it confirmed on Icelandic TV that it would amend the charges. Jóhannesson is making no comment before the special hearing.
