Lidl has said it plans to spend more than £25m installing rapid charging points for electric vehicles at 300 stores by 2022.

The discounter said its commitment supported the government’s plan to “deliver a significant increase in quality infrastructure to support ultra-low-emission vehicles” and they would be installed at all new stores and existing stores able to accommodate the infrastructure.

By 2022, the retailer said it would have installed charging points at over 300 of its stores – more than a third of its current store estate. It currently has rapid charger technology at 40 stores across the UK.

Chief development officer for Lidl, Ingo Fischer, said: “At Lidl, we are committed to tackling the environmental concerns that our customers care most about while giving them access to solutions that will support them in their ambition to lead more sustainable lives.

“Not only will our customers be able to charge their electric cars in 50 minutes – less time than it takes to do a big shop – they will be able to do it for the best price on the market. It is our hope that, through this significant investment, we will enable easier access to charging points, ultimately helping more households switch to electric vehicles.”

Since launching in the UK in 1994, Lidl now operates from some 770 stores around the country.
