Morrisons has increased its base pay rates for frontline staff to £10.20 an hour across the whole UK, making it the highest-paying supermarket in the country.
The move is due to be implemented from October of this year and represents a 2% increase in base pay for staff across the UK.
Alongside the increase, the supermarket has also announced a London location supplement of 85p per hour to all stores within the M25 – taking London-based store staff pay to £11.05 an hour.
The announcement represents a pay increase for 80,000 Morrisons staff across the business and means the supermarket has increased pay for store staff by 40% since 2014.
Morrisons has also announced a number of staff benefits: an unlimited 15% colleague discount (“introduced during Covid to show our thanks to frontline staff and maintained to help colleagues with cost-of-living increases”); two 10% family and friends discounts; an improved pension; improved holiday allowance; and long service rewards.
The retailer’s group people director Clare Grainger said: “Following last year’s 8.7% pay increase for our customer assistants, Morrisons was the first UK supermarket to reach the £10-an-hour mark and we’re very pleased to be maintaining our position as the highest-paying UK national supermarket.
“Today’s announcement recognises the important contribution our colleagues make in serving local communities up and down the country.”
The pay deal will now be put to a ballot, which will open on June 10 and follows discussions between the grocery giant and shopworkers’ union Usdaw.
Joanne McGuinness, Usdaw national officer, said: “Usdaw has negotiated an established rate of £10.20 per hour for Morrisons workers, which is the highest basic pay rate in the supermarket sector.
“We have also secured an established rate of £11.05 for staff within the M25, the same as the London Living Wage. Our members in Morrisons will now be balloted on the company’s offer.”
