Sainsbury’s has signed a two-year deal with delivery specialist Deliveroo to extend a trial to 100 stores.
The new contract follows a pilot scheme last autumn involving 10 Sainsbury’s branches.
The extension of the Deliveroo tie-up, which offers 20-minute delivery from a selection of 1,000 products, means the grocer now serves around 30% of the total UK population. New Deliveroo locations served include Aberdeen, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle and York.
Uber Eats will work with stores in Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Northampton, and Portsmouth.
Sainsbury’s director of ecommerce Nigel Blunt said: “Working with Deliveroo has helped us offer home grocery deliveries to even more customers, bringing them a super-fast service.
“We know how much Sainsbury’s customers value being able to shop for food as quickly and conveniently as possible, and we’re delighted to be able to expand this service further.”
He said: ”Partnering with Uber Eats helps us offer customers another way to get Sainsbury’s groceries delivered to their doors quickly and conveniently. The partnership has helped us increase our home grocery delivery capacity and we’re excited to be bringing the offer to more locations across the UK.”
The Deliveroo deal follows its recent IPO, which is seen as disastrous by some in the City. Deliveroo’s shares were shunned by some big investment institutions because of concerns over riders’ employment rights, governance and profitability.
Over the course of this year Deliveroo aims to expand into around 100 towns and cities to reach approximately 4 million more customers.
