Grocery giant Sainsbury’s has opened applications for seasonal staff, who will be employed for up to three months over the coming crucial Christmas period.

The grocer said it would be looking to hire some 20,000 more shop staff, warehouse workers and delivery drivers over winter, as the UK giant becomes the latest retailer to ramp up for the festive season.

Applications for the available roles are now open, who will be employed by the retailer for up to three months to help it through its busiest time of the year.

The UK-wide roles will include 18,000 roles at Sainsbury’s and 2,000 at Argos.

Staff will be employed on fixed-term contracts ranging from three weeks to three months.

Hourly pay for in-store and warehouse workers ranges from £12 an hour to £13.50, depending on the location and the role. Pay is between £13 and £14.65 for delivery drivers.

Successful candidates will receive free food during shifts and a 10% discount across Sainsbury’s and Argos stores, rising to 15% on Fridays and Saturdays.

Prerana Issar, chief people officer at Sainsbury’s, said: “As the festive season draws near, we’re getting ready to create a memorable Christmas for our customers – and our brilliant colleagues play a central role in bringing this to life.

“Joining us during this busy time is a fantastic opportunity to meet great people and acquire skills that will stay with you long after the festive season.”
