While last week’s sad job cuts at Sainsbury’s and Morrisons highlight the increasing pressures on business from the Budget, retailers should avoid letting it become a catch-all excuse for underperformance.
On paper at least, the grocery sector enjoyed another strong Christmas. And yet, in what increasingly feels like an unpleasant pattern forming year after year, January has been marked by a widespread round of job cuts across the sector.
