Topps Tiles boss Matthew Williams has set his sights on the big-box DIY retailers as he seeks to continue taking market share from them.
Williams believes the tiles specialist will be able to grab market share from B&Q and Homebase as they both close stores.
He said: “It is widely known they are intending to close space and that will be a net positive for us. It is very difficult to take market share in tiles without stores in our experience. The pure-play online market for tiles is very small indeed.”
Topps Tiles claims it has increased market share again as it grew sales 5.9% in its third quarter.
Williams argues the retailer can continue to grow its market share by stealing business from the big-box retailers and beating specialist rivals such as Tile Giant.
He also dismissed the threat of a resurgent Carpetright because he believes the product cross-over is restricted to laminate flooring and is a “very small percentage” of Carpetright’s sales.
Williams added: “In terms of carpets winning over tiles, it is difficult to know what sector is winning that battle because it is hard to find the [appropriate] numbers.”
