Department store group House of Fraser has begun consultation with some staff as part of an efficiency drive.

The retailer, which has 62 stores and employs 6,500 permanent staff, would not reveal the number of job losses expected but said that redundancies would be “minimal".

A House of Fraser statement said the retailer continuously assesses how to manage its business more efficiently and added: “As part of this strategy, [it] has conducted a review of part of the retail organisation structure in order to maximise sales, reduce costs and achieve profit targets.

"As a result, regrettably, a small number of staff are at risk of redundancy. The company is now in a formal period of consultation with staff affected by the proposed changes and the business will wherever possible try to identify alternative employment within House of Fraser.”
