For the week ending September 6, John Lewis recorded 15 of its branches up on the same time a year ago and the opening of John Lewis’s Leicester store on Thursday beat target by more than a third.
John Lewis’s Oxford Street store led the pack, with sales up 22 per cent and strong results from china, glass, floorcoverings, footwear, and audio and TV. Bluewater was the next strongest performer, with sales up 10 per cent, helped by the transformation of the store for the launch of its new Home catalogue.
John Lewis director of selling operations Nat Wakely said: “All in all, pretty much a clean sweep across the board with the majority of branches and buying areas putting on significant yearly gains.
“Most encouraging is the ongoing success of our new branch openings, the reaction to our new brands and the reception of our seasonal assortments.”
In the same week, Waitrose delivered a sales uplift of 4.6 per cent, with promotions generating strong sales. The grocer’s New World Wine Showcase also proved popular.
Yesterday, John Lewis Partnership reported pre-tax profits tumbled in the first half to July 26. At the group, pre-tax profits were down 26.6 per cent to£107.3 million. Total sales rose 3.6 per cent to£3.27 billion during the period.
