Responding to the demands made by Scott, Leahy said: 'Those comments brought a wry smile to my face. Wal-Mart are able to look after themselves and I'm sure that's what they are going to do.'
US based Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, called for an inquiry into Tesco's power. Tesco's supermarket's UK market share stands at 30.5 per cent.
'As you get over 30 per cent and higher, I am sure there is a point where the Government is compelled to intervene' Scott said.
Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy has rebuffed recent comments made by Wal-Mart boss Lee Scott about Tesco's growing UK dominance.
Leahy insisted that he did not feel aggrieved when people criticise Tesco. 'It's a natural healthy process' he said. However he maintained that people should also listen to Tesco's responses to criticism.
