Marks & Spencer lost clothing market share in the run-up to Christmas while rivals made ground, industry data has shown.
The high street giant’s market share fell 37 basis points in the 24 weeks to December 23, when sales fell 0.5%, Kantar Worldpanel data indicated.
Over the same period rivals gained market share and sales.
Next’s share edged up three basis points in the period, when its sales rose 3%.
Debenhams’ climbed four basis points on the back of 3.6% sales growth.
Value giant Primark’s market share rocketed 63 basis points in the period and sales soared 17.9%.
The total clothing market grew by 2.7% in the period. Average selling price was ahead by 1.7% and volumes rose 1%.
Clothing sales in general stores edged up 0.5%, department stores were ahead 2.6%, online sales rocketed 16% and supermarket sales advanced 6.8%.
